Players, as the silent protagonist Chell from Portal, solve puzzles by using these portals to move unconventionally between rooms or to use the ability to fling objects or themselves across a distance. The functionality of the gun has not changed between the games, but within Portal 2, players can take advantage of the bleeding of other physical effects through the portals. Game Informer identified two examples of this: one was the ability to use air currents created by Pneumatic Diversity Vents, a series of transport pneumatic tubes, through a set of portal openings to push a turret over or to draw objects into the suction. The second example was to use the power of Excursion Funnel tractor beams through portals to bring Chell or other objects to otherwise inaccessible areas. The game also introduces special paint-like gels that can be used to impart certain physical effects to a surface such as Propulsion Gel that boosts Chell's speed as she crosses a surface, and Repulsion Gel that allows her to jump from a surface.The player will be required to determine how to transport that gel to appropriate surfaces using portals in order to progress.The gels can also be applied to objects, such as the Weighted Storage Cube crates, that affect their own physical nature.In addition to the Storage Cube, there are new types of portable objects that assist the player, including Redirection Cubes with mirrored, reflective surfaces used to redirect Thermal Discouragement laser beams, Aerial Faith Plates that can launch objects placed on them, and spherical Weighted Storage Balls, which made a brief appearance in the original game in one of the advanced chambers. While most of the single-player game will take place in the test chambers created by GLaDOS or her personality cores, there will be times where the player will need to move behind-the-scenes in areas beyond the test chambers as they are reconfigured, leaving the player free of GLaDOS's observation and control. The game will include a two-player co-operative mode in addition to the single player mode. Both players control separate portal guns and can use the other player's portals as necessary; the second player's portals will be of a different color to help distinguish between the two sets.Because of the number of possible portal combinations, the test chambers that the players proceed through are much more difficult than the single-player campaign, encouraging the two players to work together. This includes complicated laser redirection using both series of portals, or working in two separate chambers, performing actions in their side of the chamber to allow the other player to progress in theirs. The game includes voice communication between players for this mode as well as split-screen for players playing locally. Online players will have the ability to temporarily enter a split-screen view to help coordinate actions. Players have the ability to place icons on the game's levels as a means of informing the other player what they need to do.

Battlefield 1942 Expansion: The Road to Rome Description

For fans of large-scale team-based first-person shooters, Battlefield 1942 scratches precisely where we itch. The game comes with sprawling maps, massive teams, and a huge assortment of player-controllable vehicles up to and including battleships, tanks, and fighter planes--all wrapped up in a World War II setting with authentic voices, phrases, and uniforms. To be honest, I didn't think that Battlefield 1942 could get much better. Being wrong has never felt so good. The Road To Rome is virtually a Platonic example of what an expansion pack should be. The six new maps are set in Italy, and include the Battle of Anzio, Operation Husky (in Sicily), as well as conflicts at Monte Cassino and Monte Santa Croce. Most of the maps tend to be hilly, which makes for exciting play and presents great opportunities for surprise attacks. There are eight new vehicles, including a tank with two turrets, a large bomber, and a new APC with a heavy gun turret. The expansion pack includes a single-player mode with nonscripted AI, which is useful to practice against when you're learning the new maps and vehicles before heading online--but there's no question that multiplayer is where Road To Rome shines. It's hard to identify any weak points in this expansion pack. If I had to nitpick though, the multiplayer network code, though improved, still remains a little flakier than it should be. And there are one or two maps that have capture points that one side or the other will be mysteriously unable to recapture once they've been lost. It would help if there was some word from EA on whether those points are set to remain uncapturable by design or are the result of a bug. There's no excuse for any self-respecting Battlefield 1942 owner to not pick up The Road To Rome. It has more of the elements you enjoyed in the original, conveniently condensed into solid, CD-shaped form. RTR is a shining example of what an expansion pack should be. --Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Crysis 2 Description

Though we've seen the new Nanosuit and the tech trailer from GDC, Crytek has been keeping its latest project under wraps for a while. That all changed this week in New York as Cevat Yerli and the team from Crytek invaded New York to show off a full demo of Crysis 2 in action. Though the demo was shown on the Xbox 360, the game will also be released on PC and PS3 this holiday season. In addition to getting to see the game for ourselves, we also had the chance to talk with Cevat and the game's writer Richard Morgan, bonafide science fiction author, about the new direction for Crysis 2. By now you've probably seen the video of the trailer shown in Times Square earlier this week, but that's only the very beginning of the story. As the nanosuit-clad soldier stands amid the ruined rubble of Manhattan, choppers fly by overhead. Aliens lurking in the shells of demolished buildings launch an attack on the choppers and, predictably, all hell breaks loose. Enter the player to kick some serious alien butt. After a brief introduction by EA Partners' General Manager David Demartini, Cevat YErli took the stage to discuss the inspiration behind the sequel. Building on the sandbox success of Far Cry and the original Crysis, Crysis 2 will allow players to overcome obstacles through a fluid mixture of stealth, speed, strength and shields. How you tackle each encounter will be entirely up to you and, based on the demo, it seems like you'll be able to switch back and forth fairly quickly between the different modes.

Story

In an alternate present, vast stretches of America have become no-go areas as the devastating effects of global warming ravage the continent. FUEL features 70 different unlockable vehicles designed to support pick up and play arcade style fun. Each of these feature aggressive styling, unique performance and surface specific handling and can compete with each other no matter how or where they are united. The six different vehicle classes include:

Bikes

Bikes are fast, quick and easy to handle, but what they have in speed they lack in durability, so ride around trees, not into them.

ATVs

ATV's four wheels offer more stability than bikes and their size allows them to be able to sneak in very narrow spaces.

Muscle Cars

Muscle cars have enough speed and strength to face extreme conditions, making them a good choice for any kind of racer.

SUVs

Powerful, stout and durable, SUVs make up for their lack of speed with all the hit that they can take before breaking down.

Buggies

The smallest of cars and the easiest to handle, buggies are definitely fast, but durability can be an issue with them.

Trucks

Each vehicle in the game comes equipped with a unique GPs system. Gameplay

Gameplay in Star Wars the Clone Wars: Republic Heroes is mission-based. Players can choose to approach the action as either a Jedi or a clone class character. Playing as a Jedi you have access to eight playable characters, and as a clone you play as one of a group of clones. The game was developed with co-op play in mind, which means players can more or less count on never fighting alone, which is a good thing considering the hordes of battle droids and other enemies you will face. The game also features a puzzle-solving gameplay component, as well as an upgrade system based on the collection of "Force Orbs" scattered throughout the game environment.

Weapons and Combat

Keeping with the games' user friendly approach, the control scheme has been designed with Jedi character's lightsaber and force powers, as well as clone characters firing trigger accessible from a single input source. In the world of Majesty, you are the ruler of the kingdom. At your service are your loyal and somewhat obnoxious subordinates, who have their own minds about how things should be done. In fact, Majesty is the only game where your heroes decide on their own what should be done and when, leaving you to try to control them through monetary incentives. The first Majesty was a niche game that combined some city-management along with some real-time-strategy elements. It wasn't a first-line title by a long shot, but it was a lot of light fun. Majesty II starts with the same basic premise and ideas and gives the game a much needed graphical update. Yet, despite what should be a great premise, flaws in the game become legion. In nearly every single way except graphics, the game falls far short of the original. The scenarios, beyond the first few, become glorified defenses against 'zerg rushes'. The AI of your heroes, the key to any game, is abysmal. Each mission becomes a quest of 'beat the right spawn points, in the right order, or lose', a guessing game on how the designers put the mission together. The blatantly bad AI is 'made up for' with increasingly insane levels of difficulty for the monsters you must fight. Strategy becomes virtually non-existant. To make matters worse, unlike the first game, there is no random map generator. There's the campaign, and a few 'set' encounter maps, and nothing else. There is also no tool for creating new maps to play on, so even that functionality is gone. It's a game that, if you can slog through it, lasts about three to four days of play time. After that, there's no point in playing. If this had been a budget title, $19.99 or so, or sold in the discount racks in a jewel case (which is, coincidentally, how you can currently find the first game's Gold version), some of these flaws might be forgiven. Unfortunately, at a $40 price point, it's supposed to be a top-line title, and it certainly isn't. Anyone interested in this type of game should save themselves the bother and find the far superior original game. Failing that, read a book instead.

Gameplay

As with the original Dragon Age: Origins game, the Awakening expansion is a single player RPG in which the path of a player's created hero is determined through a combination of ongoing actions throughout the game and the character's particular backstory, known as an Origin Story. Story

Gameplay

In Mini Ninjas players have their choice of six playable ninja characters, although as the game begins you will be limited to the main character, Hiro, and his comrade, the slow, but strong un-ninja like Futo. As part of the revealing of the storyline, players are tasked with searching out Hiro's fellow ninjas, who at the beginning of the game were sent out to investigate troubles in the land, but never returned. They were captured by the evil warlord. As Hiro and Futo set each of these free, they in turn become playable characters. Each of the six playable characters has unique abilities, and utilizes a variety of ninja-specific weapons, items and moves, as well as "Kuji Magic," which each--especially Hiro--can use to help them against enemies. These uses include classic mana-like blasts, but also more surprising and powerful forms such as the ability to take animal form in time of need.

Il ne faut pas bien longtemps à qui aurait pratiqué en 2008 King's bounty : The Legend pour prendre ses repères dans cette suite qui tient plus de l'extension : au bout de deux ou trois minutes, la mémoire musculaire se met en branle, les circuits neuronaux entrent en mode pavlovien, et le bountymane retrouve ses réflexes de crevard du loot, de junkie du PX. Ainsi le critique qui voulait voir si la came est toujours aussi bonne s'en mettra bien vingt heures dans la tronche, juste pour être sûr.

Evacuons tout de suite la question des innovations proposées par Armored princess. Il n'y en n'a que fort peu ; le scénario - oubliable - et les décors -d'opérette- ont changé, l'interface a été subtilement améliorée, les mécanismes légèrement rééquilibrés, petits détails appréciables pour le consommateur, mais rien de bouleversant. D'autant plus que le jeu recycle de bon cœur adversaires et musique, au point de donner une forte impression de déjà vu. A dire vrai, King's bounty: The Legend était par lui-même imposant, à la limite de l'indigeste : après quarante heures de fascination, on ne sentait pas vraiment la fin venir, et on avait abandonné la fouille obsessionnelle des moindres recoins d'une carte gargantuesque qui n'en finissait pas. Le développeur, Katauri, est basé à Vladivostok, où les hivers sont d'une extrême longueur, et il faut bien s'occuper entre deux cuites à la vodka. La série King's bounty a pour cœur de cible le trentenaire chômeur et célibataire qui passe ses nuits à fumer de l'herbe en caleçon devant son PC. Sa seule utilité sociale serait de servir de méthadone à World of Warcraft. Ainsi, peut-être est-il plus sain pour le joueur qui aurait arpenté le premier épisode de ne pas s'attaquer à une suite dispensable puisque très redondante. Oui, mais Chronic'art n'avait pas donné à King's bounty : The Legend, classique immédiat du stoner-game, la place qui est la sienne, et le lecteur qui voudrait s'encanailler en passant quelques dizaines d'heures, pas très bien rasé, en boxer devant son écran, pourrait faire pire que de se pencher sur cette princesse en bikini de plates, qui offre un concentré de la formule.

Il faut en effet rendre au roi les hommages qui lui sont dus. Mais commençons par lui tirer le portrait. L'héroïne, la bien en jambes Amélie, se promène en temps réel sur les routes tortueuses d'un royaume fantaisiste en carton-pâte. Elle rencontre des bandes de monstres, auxquels elle oppose sa propre armée, troupe de mercenaires piqués dans la boîte à jouet d'un collectionneur de clichés : zombies bubonneux, griffons au port noble, chevaliers rutilants. Ca bastonne sec au tour par tour. Imaginez un Heroes of might & magic sans l'aspect stratégique, avec un seul héros, mais avec plus de breloques à collecter, vous ne serez pas loin du compte. Rien de plus normal, Katauri a déterré l'ancêtre de la série, le King's Bounty de 1991 pour lui faire un bâtard en 2008. On pourrait crier à l'absence de génie, se plaindre du temps perdu, du manque de profondeur tactique, mais ce serait un abominable crime de lèse-majesté.

Et comme son grand frère, la princesse en armure a la majesté impérieuse, et sait se faire obéir du joueur en maniant à bon escient le bâton et (surtout) la carotte. Un peu partout sur la carte traînent, ingénument placés là, sans doute au petit bonheur, trésors, récompenses, fanions, pièces d'expérience, coffres à bibelots, baraques à monstres. Et autant le dire, il faut IMPERIEUSEMENT, et il s'agit de peser les mots, IMPERIEUSEMENT, question de vie ou de mort, on ne plaisante pas avec ça, il faut positivement, rigoureusement, au prix d'un rein de notre premier né, peu importe, il est nécessaire au joueur d'aller jusqu'au prochain brimborion brillant qui luit en haut à gauche de l'écran. C'est l'affaire de deux minutes d'ailleurs. Trois tout au plus. De toute façon il est deux heures du matin, que font quatre ou cinq minutes de plus ? UN combat, rien qu'UN. D'ailleurs, le coffret convoité est proprement irrésistible. Il brille à en aveugler. Il est sans doute d'une douceur ineffable. Il est juste là, mon trésor, il contient évidemment la pierre philosophale, mon trésor. Si ce n'est lui, ce sera le prochain. De toutes façons, le réveil sonne dans vingt minutes, à quoi bon se coucher, à quoi bon ?

Si flirter avec l'obsession la plus débridée ne vous fait pas peur, Armored princess est sans doute ce qui se fait de plus séduisant dans le genre. On s'étonnerait presque de la force d'attraction indécente qu' avec si peu de moyens produit le jeu de Katauri : presque pas d'histoire, un peu d'exploration, beaucoup de combats et de loots suffisent à nous transformer en rats de laboratoire, courant dans les tunnels pour amasser des bouts de fromage. Au bout de la souris, le devenir-rat. La simplicité des mécanismes nous renseigne sans doute avant tout sur nos fascinations de consommateurs, que les développeurs manipulent avec un art consommé. Il n'est pas exclu que, comme tous les grands jeux obsessionnels, Armored princess soit un fidèle reflet de son époque.

The Story

Mission-centric Gameplay

Unlike Activision's Transformers: The Game, released along side the original movie back in 2007, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen relies less on open-world gameplay and more on structured, but varied mission play. The variety in these missions comes from the fact that players can align themselves with either the Autobots or Decepticons, and that the available missions both parallel the events of the movie, as well as events unique to the game. During these missions players will be able to play as a variety of different Transformers from either side of the conflict, and with success in mission play will be able to unlock additional Transformers and earn points used to upgrade your selected faction. Playable characters include on the Autobot side: Optimus Prime, Iron Hide, Breakaway, Bumblebee, and Ratchet; and from the Decepticon side: Starscream, Sideways (a new character), Grindor, Long Haul, and Megatron. Additional Transformer types will be available in multiplayer modes. Story

Gameplay

Command & Conquer is a real-time strategy gaming franchise, and Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is no exception. Players assume color-coated versions of the GDI or Nod factions and uncover segments of the map, where they must manage Tiberium and other resources in their possession or that they they mine or commandeer in the field. Other factions occur in the game, but are not playable, and different single player campaigns are available to players depending on which of the two factions are chosen. The energy that Tiberium crystals possess is used in the manufacture and upgrading of mining and combat units, weapons and support infrastructure in preparation for impending conflicts with other players on the same map that are doing the same. Each faction has its own distinct unit types, both land and air based, which although unique, are overall more or less balanced against those of opposing faction. In addition, certain units can be captured on the battlefield and used to supplement your arsenal. The overarching task though is to combine the right number and type of units with the right battlefield strategy for the conflict and terrain at hand.Historically, C&C matches have been won by completely eliminating all enemy units that stand against you. Although there is certainly plenty of this within Tiberian Twilight, the game also is different in that players need not eliminate all enemy units, instead capturing control nodes throughout the game and holding them for a minimum amount of time. Doing so leads to earning enough points to win the match. Tiberian Twilight also differs from earlier games in the series with the addition of certain RPG game elements. Players overall orientation within their chosen faction is class based, with units falling generally in offensive, defensive or support classes depending on your play style. Story

Fisher is now a renegade operative digging into the events of the past and he doesn't like what he has found. His personal investigation into his daughter's death reveals that he's been betrayed by his former agency, the Third Echelon. Gameplay

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, as with all games in the Splinter Cell series, is a tactical stealth-action game. In single player modes players take on the role of Sam Fisher and engage in a series of missions utilizing high-tech weaponry, gadgets, lethal hand-to-hand combat and interrogation skills. Overall objectives and the necessary steps to achieve them are challenging, yet always clear via dual verbal and visual expression that seamlessly alerts players as they progress through missions. In addition, Conviction enhances the world of stealth combat that has made the Splinter Cell franchise a runaway hit for years through a series of revolutionary new gameplay features. These include: * Mark and Execute - A gameplay mechanism for eliminating several enemies at once, Mark and Execute allows players to "Mark" multiple enemies, or points in the surrounding environment for termination in batches. Once this is done, a close-combat kill is required, after which the player can activate the "Execute" portion of the mechanism to dispose of all enemies in a cinematic manner. A limited amount of Mark functionality is attached to players' weapons, so this ability must be used wisely. * Last Known Position - Last Known Position is a visual representation of where the game's AI assumes you are, based on where you were last sighted. This provides players with a wide array of options, including setting traps for enemies, flanking maneuvers or simply disappearing while you are thought to be elsewhere. * Experience System - Successful completion of objectives via the Persistent Elite Creation System earns players rewards in the form of experience points. Prologue, the co-op story mode included in Splinter Cell: Conviction is available either in split-screen local play or via Xbox LIVE. Story

In many ways, the history of humanity is the history of our conflicts against one another over the millienia. In Darkest of Days players physically explore this history and endevor to maintain it as it was meant to unfold. As the game opens the player is snatched from grim date with death by a shadow organization. As unlikely as this would seem, this is only the beginning as you are placed in the even more unlikely position of guardian of key conflicts in human history. Shuttled back and forth in time, it is your task to ensure that specific events on both sides of these conflicts occur as they were meant to happen and that mistakes made along the way are fixed.

Gameplay

Action in Darkest of Days is mission directed. As the player is transported back and forth in time, directives are spelled out that can include anything from victory of one side over the other, to the survival of an individual important to history in an otherwise doomed company and even assasinations. These actions take place in a variety of conflicts within time periods including the Roman era, the American Civil and Indian Wars, WWI and WWII. Mission types include stealth, artillery assaults, and sniper attacks and players can expect in most situations to be called upon to impact events from both sides of the front lines. To make these impacts players will have over 20 weapons on hand, most conflict-specific, but also some futuristic. They will also be able to choose their own means of completing missions according to the resources at hand across wide open battlefields designed to support over 300 combatants, each with their own AI capacities.
